The southern Democrats controlled favored and protected slavery until 1860 when the Northern and the Southern disagreed on choosing a candidate. Therefore, the two sides nominated their candidates; John for the South and Lincoln for the North. Lincoln won the election and the secession and war gave him a background to liberate the slaves through the Emancipation Proclamation, changing the political scene.
